FAQ's

We will be updating this page often with answers to your most frequently asked questions

What is the Sunrise To Sunset Relay?

The Sunrise to Sunset Relay is a 24 hour, 170 mile, team relay race from Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach to Downtown Ft Myers, finishing at the Historic Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Winter Estates. You'll be running with a team and will be responsible for running a set number of legs (your other team members will run the other legs of the race that you don't). Most legs consist of 5-7 mile runs, and usually you have 6-8 hours between legs (unless you get on one of those really fast teams, in that case we feel for you...rest will be shortened considerably).

How many teams will be allowed to enter?

We will allow up to 250 teams for the 2008 race

Should I register early to guarantee a spot in the relay?

Yes!

How do I register?

The registration checklist will take you through a step by step guide to getting registered. We've tried to make it easy, but if you have questions just shoot us an email and we'll be happy to help you get registered.

Can I register a team before I have a full roster of runners?

Yes, in fact we encourage team captains to register as early as possibly to ensure they have a place held for their team in the relay. A Team Captain Registration Form will need to be filled out and turned in, as well as a check for the full amount of registration. As you add people to your team, just make sure they are getting their paperwork to us, with your team name clearly identified on all the documents.

What if a member of my team can't make the race, can I substitute runners?

You can replace runners until the March 21, 2008. Keep in mind that substituting a runner could affect your start time (if they are much faster/slower than the previous runner), the division you are placed in, and they may not receive a properly sized T-shirt (Our T-shirt order is finalized at the end of 1st of March).

Are you accepting "Ultra Teams" (teams of 6 people or less) or Solo Runners?

Yes, absolutely! An Ultra team consist of 2-6 runners and this year we have a 6X1 Ultra Division. "Regular" Ultra squads will run anywhere from 6 to 18 legs per person (depending on how many people on the team) and the 6X1 Ultra squad will have 6 runners who each run once, about 28-30 miles (Perfect for you marathoners out there!). Contact us for more details or with questions.

When will we have leg descriptions and hand off areas defined?

Maps will be posted to the website by the end of 2007.

What information will we be getting about the course prior to the run?

We will be posting an updated course map as well as detailed maps of each leg and Course Photos in the next couple of months. In February we will have a relay handbook available for download from our web site, which will give you all the details you will need about the course, and other pertinent information.

Does every team need a volunteer?

If any member of your team resides in one of these local counties, the yes you will need to provide a volunteer for the relay. This is someone that will be working with our staff, not someone who is volunteering to drive your team van. For a look at what we are asking our volunteers to do, check out the Volunteer page on our web site for more detail.

Why do we need to provide volunteers?

This is a 24-30 hour event, covering 170 miles, and while we are good, the 3 race directors are not so good they can do it all themselves. We need some help, and sincerely appreciate every person who is a volunteer for their team...quite frankly we couldn't do this without them. We do our best to ensure the volunteers will not have to travel too far from home, and we will not work them long hours, or ask them to perform tasks we wouldn't do ourselves. Here is an overview of what a team volunteer is usually asked to do.

Who provides the vehicles and who drives the van...and does it have to be a van?

Your team is responsible for providing the vehicles.  We recommend a van, or other large vehicle that can comfortably fit 6 people, with gear, and still provide a little room to stretch out.  As to who drives your vehicles, it's really up to the team how they want to handle that.  Anyone can drive, but we can tell you from experience it is a lot nicer if the team can get a friend or family member to drive them, rather than have a member of the team drive while he/she is not
running.  It's best if you can just sit back and relax while when your not out on the course! The person who volunteers to drive you vehicle does not qualify as the "volunteer" your team is providing for the race.

If you are going to be renting a car/truck/van our participants are getting a discount through Enterprise Rent a Car. Check out our web page for details. Car Rental Deals

I want to stay the night in Ft Myers area after the race, can you hook us up with hotel discounts?

Hook you up we can, thanks to Lee County Sports we are able to offer our participants discounted hotel rates at a number of Ft Myers area hotels. Check out the Hotel Deals page for more information.

How can I be kept up to speed on all that is happening with the relay?

Phewww....finally an easy question. Just sign up for our newsletter, and we will keep you informed and up to speed. Don't worry we won't spam you (we hate that as much as you do), and your email address will never be given out. You'll get a monthly newsletter with updates, and periodically hear from us when there is something important to communicate

What can I do if I am looking for a team, or if I have a team but need another runner?

Our team matching message boards should be your first stop when looking for a team or runners.

You can also send us an email, and we will do our best to match you up with a team.

What if my team is traveling from a long ways away, do we still need to find a volunteer to come with us?

Possibly not, only teams from within the LOCAL COUNTIES will need to provide a volunteer. Click here to see if your are from one of the local counties

Where did you guys get the name "Sunrise to Sunset Relay"?

Well I'd like to say we're a marketing genius, or maybe even extremely witty, but actually the name comes from Leonard noticing that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. So you could say the sun starts in the east and ends in the west much like our relay which runs from where the sun rises to where it sets...Sunrise to Sunset Relay...has a nice ring to it if you ask me!

What if i have more questions?

That's what we are here for, just email us and we'll get right back to you.
