These rules are here to ensure every participant enjoys themselves on our course. It is our job to make sure we run a safe, fair, and fun event, and everyone's adherence to these rules will do just that. Let's keep it fun for everyone!
Rule infractions will result in time penalties against your team of 30 and 60 minutes depending on the severity of the infraction. Some rule violations will result in a disqualification.
30 Minute Violations
- Please obey any and all traffic laws. Drive within a reasonable distance to other runners, and respect the safety of all on the course. Team vehicles must drive ahead of their runners in order to meet at the exchange point, shadowing or tailing runners is prohibited.
- At the exchanges, we ask that only the active van park while waiting for incoming runners. At the van exchanges, both team vans may wait. This means be prepared for more congestion around van exchange points, and use caution
- Teams are limited to 2 vehicles to transport runners along the route.
- All vans must display a "CAUTION: Runners on Road" sign on the rear of each vehicle throughout the entire race. Feel free to make your own signs just be sure they are legible and visible to all traffic.
- Vehicles must stop and park only in designated areas. Volunteers will assist you with finding designated areas to park.
- All runners need to wear their team numbers visibly in front and cary the relay wristbands
60 Minute Violations
- From dusk until dawn runners must wear reflective vest and carry a flashlight. Runners will be required to show proof of these items at the exchange point, or they will not be allowed to complete the exchange until items have been procured
- Teams must keep their original runner rotation.
- Exchange of wrist band must happen within the designated exchange area
- Runners making a wrong turn must return to the point on the course where the wrong turn was made and then continue running. No cutting of the course is allowed.
- If a runner becomes injured or ill and is unable to finish, a substitution may occur. The next runner (of the same gender if a mixed team) in the rotation may substitute at the point of injury and continue.
- A hand-off must occur at the next exchange, which means the runner substitute may not double up on their legs.
- Injured runners, who have had their place taken in the rotation on any leg may not run again in the race
- Women must run a minimum of 17 legs or their mixed team will be reclassified (Applies only to 12 Person teams running in the "Mixed" division)
Disqualification Violations:
- All teams must fulfill the volunteer requirement, if your team does not or your volunteer does not show up for their assigned shift, your team will not be able to participate and will be disqualified.
- All waivers must be signed and returned to the Sunrise to Sunset Relay offices prior to the race in order to participate. Waivers will need to be signed by runners, volunteers, and van drivers, or their teams will not be allowed to participate.
- Minimum age for participation is 14 . A parent or guardian must also sign a waiver for participants between ages 14 and 18.
- Properly dispose of trash and human waste.
- Any runner spotted littering, or urinating/defecating on private property, will cause their entire team to be immediately disqualified. We have a no tolerance policy regarding this, please remember we are guests in the areas we are running through, most of us would like to be invited back next year, if you cannot respect the cities, highways, neighborhoods, and trails we will be using we will not be seeing you at the 2nd annual run.
- Volunteers shall be treated as race officials at all times. Any disrespectful conduct towards volunteers will not be tolerated
- Public nuisance, not obeying noise ordinance laws (as defined on leg maps)
- No bicycles on the course, or "pacing" of team members with team vehicles during daylight hours. For safety purposes, from dusk until dawn, teams will be allowed to follow their night runners with bikes, and "leap frog" their runners with the team vehicle. Bikes and team vehicles will be expected to yield to normal traffic along the route so as not to create an impediment to traffic flow.
