We've designed a course we hope will accomplish four things.
1. Showcase much of the natural beauty Florida has to offer. From the beaches and waterways on the east coast to unique views of Lake Okeechobee, to rural country roads and sweeping views of the Caloosahatchee we feel we've encapsulated much of what people come to think of when we say "Florida" as well as other beautiful regions that may not commonly come to mind.
2. Be an achievable distance, and designed in such a way that runners of all abilities will enjoy themselves. On average each runner will run 3 legs of approximately 4.6 miles each. We've designed the course to be shorter in the second half (legs of less distance) than in the first half. So as you get tired, your legs will become somewhat easier.
3. Be challenging enough to push those runners looking for something "extra". While most legs average out to 4.6 miles, there are numerous legs much longer, especially along the banks of Lake Okeechobee. Along the 50+ miles this course wraps around the south end of the lake you can push yourself on runs as long as 9 miles. Or volunteer yourself for the longer sets of legs, such as runner #10 would have on a 12 person team, where total distance ran will be over 17 miles, with average leg distance of 5.7 miles. We also have an Ultra Division, where teams of 6 compete. Average mileage per runner in the Ultra Division works out to around 28 total miles. As you can see there are plenty of ways a runner can challenge themselves on this course.
4. Last but definitely not least, we want our course to be an enjoyable one, which means adventurous but safe. Being a course set in both urban areas as well as more rural settings presents a unique set of challenges, both as a runner and event director. Many of our rural roads lack shoulders (although usually have adequate grass space for runners to yield if there is traffic), and in the urban areas traffic can be an issue. Any and every place we feel runner safety could be an issue we will have course volunteers and plenty of signage to alert drivers to the presence of runners. A safe and enjoyable time for everyone is our goal, and we will do what it takes to achieve that.
